Empirical Insights into Drivers, Governance and Practical Implementation

This study examines the current state of transition planning in German banks of varying sizes and business models. Based on qualitative expert interviews with more than 20 institutions, it analyses key drivers, implementation progress, and challenges across three core dimensions: climate targets and sector pathways, client dialogue, and governance. Featuring a guest contribution by Eurosif on the implications of the EU Omnibus package, the study derives concrete recommendations for action for banks and policymakers.

Implementing the EUDR in Brazilian-German Soy Supply Chains

This study analyses the practical implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) along the Brazilian-German soy supply chain. Based on qualitative interviews and field visits with actors across the entire value chain – from producers and traders to retailers, as well as representatives of Indigenous communities – the study identifies key challenges in implementing the EUDR and presents practical solution approaches. It focuses on issues such as traceability, compliance with Brazilian legislation, and the risks of displacement effects. The study is aimed at companies, policymakers, and civil society.

The nine articles examine current trends and developments and present concrete measures addressing operational sustainability issues, as well as questions related to sustainable equity and debt financing and corporate organization.

Analysis – Results – Implications

Analysis of the sustainability performance of Luxembourg’s largest pension fund, the Fonds de Compensation (FDC). Based on the second sustainability report, a comprehensive assessment of the investment strategy is conducted, focusing on ecological and particularly climate-related risks. The analysis also includes the development of key recommendations to enhance the FDC’s sustainability performance.

The Path to Sustainable Finance

Against the backdrop of the intensifying debate on sustainable financial markets, renowned experts and leaders from academia, civil society, and—above all—the financial sector provide insights into the current state of the discussion and highlight solutions to the challenges facing the transition to a sustainable financial system. This anthology offers insights into current trends and developments, as well as into strategies, instruments, and operational processes that are already being applied in practice today.

Conception – Analysis – Implications

Analysis of the 100 largest equity funds in Luxembourg based on a comprehensive sustainability key performance indicator system from the rating agency ISS ESG. The funds were analyzed and ranked based on both classic backward-looking metrics and available forward-looking metrics.

Assessment of Transformation Pathways for Various Emission-Intensive Sectors

In a joint project with Prognos AG and NKI, the transformation requirements for various emission-intensive sectors were analyzed within an ambitious transformation scenario, and the resulting financing needs in Germany up to 2050 were quantified. Various emission reduction technologies were assessed regarding their emission reduction potentials and the costs associated with their implementation.

Challenges and Solutions Using Brazilian Soy as an Example

Analysis of the central challenges in establishing deforestation- and conversion-free value chains and examination of solutions to overcome existing barriers. The analysis identifies areas for action and provides recommendations for companies, policymakers, and civil society organizations. In addition to a literature review, the study is based on interviews with industry experts and stakeholders along the supply chain.
