AI agents can be categorized into different types based on their function and application context. In practice, they primarily differ in the tasks they perform, how autonomously they act, and how deeply they are integrated into processes.
A common category is assistance and analysis agents. They support employees by researching, structuring, summarizing, or evaluating information. Typical examples include reporting agents, market or competitor analyses, and internal knowledge assistants. These agents generally do not make independent decisions but provide well-founded bases for decision-making.
Automation agents, which autonomously execute specific process steps, are distinct from these. This includes agents for document processing, data maintenance, offer preparation, or standardized review processes. They operate rule-based within defined guardrails and are closely integrated into existing systems.
Another category is decision support agents. These agents analyze complex data situations, identify patterns or deviations, and provide recommendations for action, for example, in purchasing, planning, or risk assessment. The final decision usually remains with humans, but it is prepared much more thoroughly and quickly by AI.
The appropriate type of AI agent depends heavily on the specific application. As part of our AI Potential Analysis, we work with you to analyze which use cases will create the greatest added value for your company and develop tailored solutions based on this.
